TRANSPORTATION
New Horizons Supported Services (NHSSI) employs 17 drivers, Dispatcher/Supervisor and Program Assistant. It maintains a fleet of vehicles that is used to provide transportation for many of the individuals served to include individuals in wheelchairs. There are currently 23 vehicles that include 14 passenger vans, three (5) body-on-chassis buses, and 4 cars. These vehicles operate during peak and off-peak periods, as needed.

Our goal is to provide safe, reliable, clean, courteous andpredictable transportation to and from NHSSI, and work sites [if applicable] within the NHSSI service area. Typically, these service areas are Prince Georges, Calvert, Charles, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery Counties. We operate in accordance with all applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations in the most efficient, and effective manner. Stringent license criteria are used when considering eligibility for driving. Drivers must pass a comprehensive training before they operate the vehicles. This training includes, but is not limited to, the proper procedures for securing individuals on the vans and providing assistance to individuals when they are entering and exiting the vans. Many transportation department employees assist with the various programs offered by NHSSI in other ways. For example, some drivers work as part-time job coaches. This allows program departments flexibility in covering work assignments which otherwise might be left open. In addition, there are times when NHSSI plans off-site social gatherings and activities, where drivers provide assistance during midday. As can be seen from the above, the Transportation Department is an intergral part of the multi-faceted approach NHSSI uses to increase the community inclusiveness of those with developmental disabilities.
